Language Features of Explanation Text

- Noun Phrases

which functions as an adverbial. Adverbial referred to here is a word, phrase or clause that explains the entire clause by adding information on time, place, condition, way, reason or purpose. This noun phrase can also answer the questions "when", "where", "why" and "how". An example is The cells in the lining of the stomach
and
small intestine produce and release hormones that control the functions of the digestive system. Well, the first Phrase in bold is an example from Noun Phrase describing a place. Whereas the second phrase is an example of a Noun Phrase which describes purpose.

- Action verbs,

This type of verb is a verb that is used to describe and describe someone's actions or activities.

Action verbs do not only describe physical actions performed by humans, animals or something, but also describe mental actions such as thinking, imagining, and so on.

Action verbs can be used in various English tenses such as present tense, past tense, future tense, progressive tense because they want to show when the action or activity occurred.

Example: do, make, create, remove, produces, enters, moves, dan lain-lain.

- Simple present tense

The simple present tense is formed from the verb-1 (present tense) in the form of an ordinary verb that indicates an action or state, or in the form of the verb "to be" (is, am, are).

Verb-1 is a bare infinitive with the addition of -s or -es (except verb to be) specifically for the subject in the form of a singular noun (such as: Tita, book) or a third person singular pronoun (such as: she, he, it); or without any additions to the subject in the form of plural nouns (such as: boys, men, books) or plural pronouns (such as: we, they), pronoun I / you, or compound subject with the conjunction "and" (such as: you and I, Tina and Ratih).

When using be, is is used in the subject as a singular noun and a third-person singular pronoun; are in the plural noun, plural pronoun and you; while am on I.

- Passive voice, passive voice is used when the explanation focuses on the process or action, for example is produced, are fermented, is reflected, and others.

- Using Technical TermsThese technical terms refer to technical terms related to the topics discussed in this text. For example, in texts that discuss the origin of rain, of course there will be terms precipitation, condensation, evaporation, etc. This term is then called the technical term for the text regarding the origin of rain.

- Containing explanation of the process
Using Chronological Connectors
Almost all texts use chronological connectors.
Examples of chronological connectors:
  • First
  • Second
  • After that
  • Next
  • Then
  • Finally
  • etc.

TEXT 1

How Does Rain Happen?

We all know that rain is primary source of fresh water for most areas of the world, providing suitable condition for diverse ecosystems. Rain is water that descends from the sky through several processes until the rain occurs. Do you know how does rain happen?

The phenomenon of rain is actually a water circle. The concept of water circle includes the sun heating the Earth’s water surface and causing the water surface to evaporate. Earth’s water includes water from lake, river, and ocean. Then, the water vapor experiences condensation and becomes condensed vapor. Condensed vapor is formed from droplets so that when the air temperature is higher, it makes the droplets gather, condensed and formed into clouds. The presence of winds helps clouds move and gather in other places that have lower temperatures. At that time, the droplets become heavier and unstoppable and cause the droplets to fall so that there is rain.

If the droplets drop in an area with very cold temperatures, the droplets will drop as snow. However, not all rain reaches the surface. Some evaporates while falling through dry air. This is called Virga, a phenomenon which is often seen in hot, dry desert regions.

Explanation:

The example of the text above is an explanation text because the text describes a natural phenomenon, namely the occurrence of rain. In addition, the text has the same characteristics and structure as the Explanation Text, namely:

Characteristic features:

Using the Simple Present Tense
We can see that all the sentences in the text use the Simple Present Tense.

Using Action Verbs. For example, experiences and drop.
Using Passive Voices. For example, "Condensed vapor is formed from droplets so that when the air temperature is higher ...".
Using Noun Phrases. For example, Earth's water surface.
Using Technical Terms. For example, evaporate, condensation, and Virga.
Contains an explanation of the process of rain.

Structure:

LANGUAGE FORM :

1.  Using tenses that are dependent on the context of the time in a sentence, in other words, can be the past tense, present tense, or future tense.

2.  Many use verbs or verbs in active and passive sentences.

3.  Using transitions such as due to, because, consequently, as a result , and causes .

4.  Using third person point of view.

GENERIC STRUCTURE :

1.  Have a main idea on the topic of sentences that will be covered in the whole paragraph.

2.  Have supporting details or supporting sentences in the form of causes.

3.  End with a concluding sentence or a conclusion in the form of a result.

This is a video about cause and effect :Click Here

Each example and explanation of the sentence below:

1. Because he got stomachache, he didn't attend the exam

Explanation: “Because” (because) in this first example sentence is a “special case” conjunction, because it is placed at the beginning. This conjunction connects "he got stomachache" (he got stomachache) as the effect of the cause, which is "he didn't attend the exam"

2. I'm full, so, I don't eat anymore

Explanation: From this example sentence, we know "I'm full" as the effect, while "I don't eat anymore" is the cause. The cause-effect conjunction in this second example sentence is "so".

3. The timer will start when every guest have come in.

Explanation: The conjunction "when" in the example of the third sentence is used to connect "the timer will start", which is the cause, and "every guest have come in", which is the effect.

4. I need to improve my knowledge; therefore, I want to study that subject.

Explanation: “Therefore” as a cause-effect conjunction in this example sentence is unique, considering that if it is in the middle of a sentence, “therefore” is separated by a semicolon (;).

In the case of this example sentence, “therefore” connects “I need to improve my knowledge” as an effect, and “I want to study that subject” as a cause.

Example of Application of Cause-Effect in Conversation

The reference conversation examples that we will study at this point also use the same guidelines as the previous point regarding examples of applying cause-effect in sentences.

Teacher: Remember, your cake batter will burn when you put it in oven for too long.

Hina: U-ummm…! I'm sorry, Teacher! I was mixing the toppings, so, I didn't notice the oven!

Ciara: * whispers to Sasha * Psssh… Don't you think Hina was digressed because of seeing Kacung over the last few days?

Sasha: * whispers back to Ciara * Hmmm… It could be! After all, I never imagined that the genius Hina will digress as a result of getting mad about a handsome folk!

If we look at the conjunctions from the example conversation above, we will see that they all lie in the middle of cause and effect.

The purpose of this is all to complete some conjunctions that can also be put in the middle, such as "because (of)" and "when", as put in front as in the example sentence in the previous point, and emphasize the remaining conjunctions (i.e. "So" and "as a result (of)") which can only be placed in the middle.

In the first line of the conversation example, we see "when" as the conjunction between "your cake batter will burn" (your cake batter will burn) as the effect and "you put it in oven for too long" (you put it in the oven too long. ) as the cause.

The next line, which is the second line of dialogue in the example conversation, has "so" as the conjunction of "I was mixing the toppings" (I mix the complementary ingredients) as effect and "I didn't notice the oven" (I forgot about oven) as a cause.

In the third line, we see the cause, namely "seeing Kacung over the last few days" (seeing Kacung these days), with the effect, namely "Hina digressed" (Hina digressing) connected by the conjunction "because of" (because) .

Regarding "digress" or digress, this is further referred to again by a different tense in the last line of the example conversation, namely "the genius Hina will digress" (the genius Hina will digress), which is also the effect.

After the conjunction "as a result of" (as a result of), we also see the existence of "getting mad about a handsome folk" (infatuation with a handsome creature) as the cause.

Hopes and Plans

Assalamualaikum, hello guys...

Happy new year!!

2020 has passed, I hope this year will be better.

what are you plans and hopes for this year?

2020 is over, short but meaningful. Many times have passed, whether good or bad.

And I'm very grateful to be able to go through everything well.

Likewise with you, I hope you can do well too.

I hope this year is better than before, and that this pandemic ends soon.

I really want to meet friends at school. And learn face to face.

This year's plan must really be implemented, especially since I will turn 17 years old.

I have to be more active and focused on studying in order to enter college.

My dad says, I procrastinate. So this year I have to work on it immediately.

I will also try some new activities, to add to my hobbies and hone my talents.

I will make the previous year as a memory and lesson.

LETTER TO GOD

Hey, Hey, Hey!!  I'm back again. Now, I'll share with you about the letter. Have you ever write a letter? If I ever made it.  What ...
